Identified 8th Vermont Infantry Regiment CIVIL War CDV

Nice image of henry carpenter, 8th vermont infantry regiment. This same image can be seen in his record on the civil war database website. Henry carpenter was from belvidere, vt and enlisted on 10/23/1861 as a corporal. Into comapny a, 8th vermont infantry regiment. He re-enlisted on 1/5/1864 as a veteran volunteer and finally mustered out on 6/28/1865 at washington, dc. He was promoted to sergeant majro on 9/17/63 and 1st lieutenant on 8/23/64. Most likely this image was taken when he was home on leave early in 1864 for re-enlisting. Carpenter sports his veteran volunteer strpie on his sleeves. The mount is a bit soiled. Some scuffing to teh image. Edge wear. But, the image is very clear. With a lope you can see the hand stitch marks on the sergeant major stripes. The 8th vermont saw extensive action at prot hudson, la in 1863. In 1864 the regiment was involved in the shenandoah valley campaign seeing extensive action at cedar creek, fisher's hill, and opequan. The photographer's impirnt is g davis, montpelier, vt. With a lope you can see a free mason's symbol that has been hidden in the photographer's imprint as part of the camera! (see image).
